The Badger Overland trail

Inspired by the Trans-Wisconsin Adventure Trail, we set out to see if we could run a route from Illinois to Lake Superior in our side by side.

About the trail

Explore the diverse landscape and history of wisconsin from you utv

"The Badger Overland Trail" is a 500-mile route we plotted in the spring of 2023, that an ATV/UTV can legally navigate from the Illinois border (near South Wayne, WI) to the shores of Lake Superior (at Herbster, WI) utilizing Wisconsin's network of designated ATV/UTV road routes and trails.

The journey starts in Southwest Wisconsin, winding through the Driftless region of Wisconsin, through rolling hills, past meadows and spring-fed creeks. As you make your way up the state, you'll have the opportunity to explore some of Wisconsin's best ATV/UTV trails - Black River State Forest, Perkinstown, Dead Horse, Battle Axe, Tuscobia and more. You'll travel past Amish settlements, through historic mining and logging towns like Mineral Point, Cable and Iron River. All along you'll have opportunities to enjoy Wisconsin's natural beauty and warm midwest culture.

The story of our journey

We first began to think about this trip almost three years before we attempted it. Over time, as more roads opened to ATV/UTVs, we were able to plot a route that we believed we could run across the entire state. But we wouldn't know for sure until we actually did it.

We documented our 1,000 mile round trip journey (camping along the way with our two children) on our YouTube Channel - The Northwoods Family.

Guide to the Badger Overland Trail

Section 1 - south wayne to wilton

Paved roads and railroad bed trails wind through Wisconsin's dairyland, through historic settlements, and across the Wisconsin River.

Section 2 - Wilton to Black River State forest

Scenic country roads traverse through the rolling hills of Wisconsin's Driftless region, passing numerous Amish settlements before connecting to the off-road trails of the Black River State Forest.

Section 3 - Black River state forest to price county

The Clark & Jackson County ATV trails provide a great riding experience through dense forests. Passing by farms and through small towns, the route meets up with the Perkinstown ORV Trails and enters the southernmost area of the Nicolet-Chequemagon National Forest.

section 4 - price county to cable/drummond

In the true north of Wisconsin, the route becomes heavily off-road, exploring some of the best ATV trails in the state. Snaking northward through Clam Lake, through the territory of Wisconsin's largest elk herd, the route turns towards the historic logging towns of Cable and Drummond.

My section 5 - drummond to lake superior

With Lake Superior only hours away, off-road trails lead to another historic logging boom town, Iron River. An hour of riding winding trails through forests of Aspen trees leads to the small "town" of Herbster, WI - where you can camp on the beach of Lake Superior, and even go for a swim if you dare!
